Part (4/8): www.youtube.com How Deedat Made Me Daaee – Dr. Zakir Naik explains Sheikh Ahmed Deedat’s contribution behind him becoming a daaee (Islamic missionary). Introduction of Sheikh Ahmed Deedat: The charming and charismatic founder of the IPCI, born in July 1, 1918 in the Surat district of India, was an Islamic scholar, author and lecturer. His family migrated to South Africa in 1927. He established the first Islamic religious institution in South Africa to train preachers at the Assalaam Institute in Braemar. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, Lionel Bart’s 1961 London and Broadway musical hit glossed over some of Dickens’ more graphic passages but managed to retain a strong subtext to what was essentially light entertainment. For its first half-hour or so, Carol Reed’s Oscar-winning 1968 film version does a masterful job of telling its story almost exclusively through song and dance. Once nine-year-old orphan Oliver Twist (Mark Lester) falls in with such underworld types as pickpocket Fagin (Ron Moody) and murderous thief Bill Sykes (Oliver Reed), it becomes necessary to inject more and more dialogue, and the film loses some of its momentum. But not to worry; despite such brutal moments as Sikes’ murder of Nancy (Shani Wallis), the film gets back on the right musical track, thanks in great part to Onna White’s exuberant choreography and the faultless performances by Moody and by Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger. The supporting cast includes Harry Secombe as the self-righteous Mr. Bumble and Joseph O’Conor as Mr. Brownlow, the man who (through a series of typically Dickensian coincidences) rescues Oliver from the streets. Oliver! won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and a special award to choreographer Onna White.

Sheldon Turner is the prototype for the smart, brash, ambitious young screenwriter – only he’s also got a law degree from NYU and has had his fiction published in the New Yorker. Turner recently broke through with his script for the 2005 remake of The Longest Yard, starring Chris Rock and Adam Sandler, and he has half a dozen other scripts in development. He’s got insane discipline, writes longhand, and boycotts email. He figured out how to work the system, and he’s got more witty axioms for how to play the Hollywood game than a Tropicana craps dealer at 3 am. But you’ll just have to hear Turner talk to get it – what being the biggest guy in the room can do for you, how to read an audience, what to say in pitch meetings, and why you should let everyone know that you think Lost in Translation sucks.

This was a college project for Vega (South Africa) [2008]. The brief was to take a 1 minute dialogue from a movie and animate it using only type. I chose to do Superbad because each of the characters were really differentiated from one another and giving them a typeface that represented their personality came to be really easy. I used Adobe After Effects to animate this, using a helluva lot of text layers. That’s it. meet me there. (Audio used from the movie Superbad (2007) is property of Sony Pictures and all respective owners)
