  • Anna:

You study for the European Masters in version and interpreting, then become a member of the AIIC.
    Google all that.

You need schooling. Get a university degree (preferably a graduate degree) in Version/Interpreting, and get the relevant encounter. Interpreting is not just about knowing both languages with superior glibness (although that does play a huge role in the process), it also involves having excellent focus, the ability to reckon clearly and to mentally multitask, as well as the ability to properly articulate the feeling, tone and message from one language to another. Even some native speakers cannot do these things with their own language. Ever heard of the kaput telephone? You`ll also need to familiarize yourself with a digit of like words (specialized terminology) that will be used by a particular job (legal, health check, affair, etc.) usually prior to the actual session.

Take note that during interpreting, the interpreter usually has to listen, talk and reckon at the same time, so if you`re the kind of person who cannot “hear him/herself reckon while other people are speaking” you will need to work on that, among other things. Plus, the huge cash in interpreting usually comes from working for corporations or for the regime, both of which will probably not hire an interpreter without tangible evidence of their competency (i.e. a Language Degree, Certificate of Competence, job encounter, etc.). After all, anyone can say that they are a native speaker of any language; even if they are, it does not necessarily mean that they can communicate effectively too.
