As someone whose first language is french and preferred language is spanish, I find english dull.
I do realise the importance of speaking it well though, and the advantage(s) that go along with that.

  • RJ:

Dull, too much vocabulary, and irregular verbs.

English is a very poetic language, and if you read some litterature, you realize that there’s much more vocabulary than usualy said. There are some poems I prefer in English, for example “Tonight I can write the saddest lines” by Neruda or “You who by no means arrived” by Rilke. To those who reckon English is dull, you must listen to some records of Dylan Thomas conception his poems, it’s really incredible. Anyway, this is my opinion.

I started to learn English as a second language when I was about 9 years ancient. Back then I thought English was “the coolest language in the world” and I wanted to learn it as quick as doable. I even questioned my teacher for extra homework

From what I remember, English sounded quite smooth and supple. The diphtongs made it sound like you were gliding over the vowels, stretching out the words. Still it wasn’t singy-songy at all, but rather a bit monotonous. It sounded like the kind of language that would be spoken by a “cool guy with sunglasses” if that gives you any thought. Smooth and polished, with a cool edge to it.

Now, when I’ve learned English, it sounds neutral to me. I still reckon it’s a fantastic language though. English has a much richer vocabulary than Swedish (my native language) and I like to read novels and poems in English. There are many fantastic English expressions which doesn’t sound half as excellent in Swedish.
